ILP 1: Tech Showcase

For my first independent learning project I went to the Tech Showcase after class on September 18th. They had a lot of cool stuff to show off from the Tech Sandbox - there was a 3D printer, virtual reality, laser keyboards, and many more high-tech gadgets that I had a hard time wrapping my head around. We're really living in the future, you guys, but I'm a simple gal. My favorite tech gadget they had was the Clear Touch Interactive (pictured above). It's basically a big, touchscreen computer. They've shown one in action on Grey's Anatomy. You don't have to be Meredith Grey to use this thing though! I'm not a surgeon by any means. I'm much more right brain (as you can see lol). I opened paint and drew a wave. It was pretty cool because whenever I use paint on the computer,  my paintings always end up wonky. I have to look at a vertically-oriented screen, while using a mouse like a pen on a horizontally-oriented surface which is displaced from the screen. Not so with this guy. Drawing was natural. It was as if I were drawing on paper with so many more instant features like instant colors without mixing paint, fixing mistakes without wasting a canvas, cropping without having scrap paper lying around... you know, all the benefits of using a computer! 

The best part about this technology is that it is quite literally hands-on. It's a good way to get students excited about learning whether they're playing educational games, learning piano, or discovering parts of the body. The possibilities are endless!

    If found this to be really good Missy. Like you said we really are living in the future in today's time. Technology is crazy and its always evolving into something bigger and better.

Independent Learning Project #2  Tech SandBox - Virtual Reality  So today I went to the Tech Sandbox for my second ILP.  I went to the Tech Show case for my first ILP so I was already pretty familiar with the type of equipment they had to offer, but I never had a change to use the Virtual Reality glasses. IN the Tech Sandbox I had it all to myself!  Before today, I had never used Virtual Reality. We really are living in the future - I was able write in thin air and teleport to an entirely different world. It looked so real!  I think it could be used as a cool, educational tool to train students in alternate realities. For example, imagine you're a marine biology course instructor. With various softwares, you could teach your students how to take samples and carry out experiments with no real risk or hazard. "The Flipped Classroom" I've only ever taken one online course and it didn't go so well. I was a junior in high school. The class was College Algebra. If you can't tell by now, I'm very much a people person. Not a computer person. All of our lessons and tests and activities were done online... and I failed miserably. Not because I'm bad at math, but because I just can't learn from a computer. The concept of a flipped classroom would have been really beneficial for me in that stressful season of my life when I all too often found myself staring at a blinking cursor in the middle of my screen.
